An Introduction to International Estate Planning: Proper Planning to Protect Assets, and to Avoid Unnecessary Taxes and Disputes

      Register Today!

Our society, especially here in San Diego, is becoming increasingly more global and diverse. It is common for clients to reside in multiple jurisdictions, and to own assets in multiple jurisdictions. Proper planning is essential to protect your client’s wishes and property, and to avoid unnecessary tax consequences. Furthermore, disputes involving cross-border matters are becoming more common, and it is essential for planners and litigators alike to have a basic understanding of international estate and tax planning.
Please join us for a presentation by attorneys Michelle Graham and Helen Cheng, who are international estate and tax planning partners at Withers Bergman, LLP. The gift and estate tax rules for non-U.S. individuals are very different than for U.S. individuals. This presentation will provide an overview of the transfer tax rules for non-U.S. persons, including U.S. residency and domicile tests, transfer tax rules, and situs rules. The presentation will also cover common planning techniques for non-U.S. domiciliaries with assets or beneficiaries in the U.S. Finally, the presentation will discuss pointers to avoid cross-border disputes.

Ms. Graham and Ms. Cheng are leaders in the field of international estate and tax planning. Ms. Graham is a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC), and an International Academy of Estate and Trust Law (IAETL) Academician. Ms. Cheng currently serves as chair of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners San Diego Branch (STEP SD), and on the STEP USA Board of Directors.
